If You Give a Preschooler Some Crab Rangoon*

If you give a preschooler some crab rangoon, he'll wake up crying at 3 am.  You'll rush into his bedroom and realize that he's thrown up quite a lot of it.  You'll start to comfort him and ease him out of bed.  As you do, he'll notice that there's a mess on the corner of his Superman blanket and start to cry again.  You'll take the blanket (and two others, the fitted sheet, the mattress pad, his pillow and jammies) to the washing machine. On your way, some mess will drip onto the carpet.  When you reach the washer, you'll remember that there's still a load of clean, wet clothes inside.  You'll try to switch that load to the dryer but suddenly remember that the dryer is full of towels. While you are trying to figure out where to place the smelly laundry so you can shift loads, your preschooler will shout that he's getting cold.  You'll go back upstairs, dress him in clean, warm jammies and pretreat the carpet stains.  While you are scrubbing the carpet with an old towel, you will remember the linens downstairs.  When you pass by the kitchen on your way to the washer, you'll think your preschooler should have some water.  In the dark, you'll pour water into a cup (and on the floor) then forget what else you need to do.  Back upstairs, you'll tuck in your little one and whisper goodnight.  Then you'll bend over his tiny bed and the smell from the carpet will remind you that there's much more work to do.  As you hurriedly leave the room, you'll hear him say, "Thank you, Mommy" and it will all be worth it.

  1. Beautiful post! I hope the little guy is feeling better soon. You're an amazing mom. And boy do I know it with that laundry thing. As a matter of fact, that reminds me... :)

  2. LOVE the post. I just read that book yesterday to my son's class! I hope the semi digested crab rangoon smell from the carpet disappears soon and that your son is back to pre-rangoon status.
    Hugs.

  3. You go mom! : )
And after all of this, to think I am still considering. I wish there were a way to send a real message, but I'll ask my question in a comment. I am single mom of a sweet, amazing just turned two year old boy. I've been thinking of trying to have just one more for over a year, but at the same time am a bit scared out of my wits. Not sure how to make the emotions mesh, but I am wondering how you came to your decision, and if you have any words of wisdom in this decision process. Your blog is great! My 'blog' has so far been isolated to my personal, random entry journal : )

  4. I hope you were able to get back to sleep, got the rangoon linens washed, and that he's feeling much better now. It's so true that the sweet whisper from our little ones can really take the edge off the difficult situations. Wonderful entry.
