DIY Spring Break

I always wondered why my colleagues plan elaborate trips to exotic destinations  for spring break.  I'm mean isn't having a full week off from teaching duties vacation enough?  Once I became a mom, I learned that the answer was a resounding "no".  Since when does a mom get a day or even a single hour off when she stays home?  Now I understand why everyone plans spring vacations for their families.  It's not to go away.  It's to get away.
This year, even my attempts to have a staycation were thwarted.  Some things were outside my control and others were just the result of poor time management.  In addition, midweek I had a major, unexpected expense.  Major, as in my jaw was on the floor for an hour after I received the invoice.  Oh, well, it's only money.  I have to keep saying that...it's only money, it's only money...

After my initial disappointment that spring break was not turning out to be a day at the beach or a walk in the park, I decided to, well... take a walk in the park.  It was still quite chilly but we made the best of the extra hours of sunlight.  The boys had a great time and I began to realize that what makes vacation days special are the leisurely moments sprinkled with ordinary fun.  This week was about appreciating what we have.

We found a sunny corner to start seedlings

I hope all this hard work sprouts!

Chocolate birds' nests--A real treat!

But Liam wasn't quite sure

We didn't go anywhere, but we took lots of train trips!

  1. Awesome! I was thinking of starting seedlings too. Cool idea. And for the record, the reason I like to get away is because when I'm away from home I don't feel guilty about the dishes and the laundry and the bills piling up. If you ever want a cheap vacation, come to western wisconsin. Free lodging. :)
