Let's Talk About It--Or We Could Just Paint a Picture
I recently came across this title on a message board and ordered Nan's Donut Dilemma that same evening. I'm glad I did. It's perfect for our SMC family. Since Henry doesn't ask many questions (the last time was over a year ago) I'm never sure how much we should be talking about our family composition. With kindergarten looming, I know there's more I need to prepare him for. But does he want to know? What does he want to know? How much does he want to know? I thought this children's book would be a good way to bring up the subject once again. We read it Monday afternoon while Liam was napping. The illustrations are cute and the story is well-told and to the point (you can lose young readers with a lengthy prologue).
Afterwards I asked Henry what he thought of the story. "Good." he said. "Can we make a craft now?" Not exactly the question I was expecting. I gathered the supplies and mentioned how much I enjoyed reading books about families. All kinds of families. I told him that I have a couple of other family stories on our bookshelf. He shrugged and asked me to find the gluestick and paints.
