Let's Talk About It--Or We Could Just Paint a Picture

I recently came across this title on a message board and ordered Nan's Donut Dilemma that same evening.  I'm glad I did.  It's perfect for our SMC family.  Since Henry doesn't ask many questions (the last time was over a year ago) I'm never sure how much we should be talking about our family composition.  With kindergarten looming, I know there's more I need to prepare him for.  But does he want to know?  What does he want to know?  How much does he want to know?  I thought this children's book would be a good way to bring up the subject once again.  We read it Monday afternoon while Liam was napping.  The illustrations are cute and the story is well-told and to the point (you can lose young readers with a lengthy prologue).

Afterwards I asked Henry what he thought of the story.  "Good." he said.  "Can we make a craft now?"  Not exactly the question I was expecting.  I gathered the supplies and mentioned how much I enjoyed reading books about families.  All kinds of families.  I told him that I have a couple of other family stories on our bookshelf.  He shrugged and asked me to find the gluestick and paints.

  1. So glad mine aren't the only ones like this. He'll ask questions when he's ready. It's good that you have the book and read it to him and are poised for his questions when the time comes. It's a total buzz kill, though, when our kids aren't ready for something at the same time as their parents. Like the day I told my daughter we'd have to put our cat to sleep. It didn't seem to phase her for weeks. When it did, though, it was a big deal for her, and I had already moved past it a bit. Hopefully your paths intersect at that perfect time in the near future.

  2. It is funny that this came up here today because just last night Sam had this in his pile of 3 books he wanted to read before bedtime and when I sat down next to him and said, "Which should we read first?" he said "No that one. I don't like that one." And he threw it across the room. When we first got it he loved it and we read it every night for 2 weeks. But we haven't read it in a while. "You don't want to read the book about the girl without a dad?" I asked. "No. I want to read about the Sea Turtles covered in oil." (Sam's got his own subscription to National Geographic Kids (which I highly recommend) and he's currently in to everything you ever wanted to know about Sea Turtles. I know the donut book will be back in his pile again eventually. I love how kids go in these phases.

  4. I had not heard of this book before. They carry other books by her at the library and local bookstore but not this one. I think I'll have to order it...although Scarlett isn't ready for these books yet. I like how you pave the way for what's to come in my future. Thanks :)
