Holiday Highlights

This year we had a real Christmas.  Real as in not perfect.  (I doubt even Norman Rockwell had a Norman Rockwell Christmas every year.)  At our house, we had lots of fun, food, tantrums and timeouts.  You know, a real holiday.

The elves stopped by while we were at church on Christmas Eve.  Each year they do this to make sure the house is ready for Santa.  While they were here, they filled the boys' stockings.  And broke a Nutcracker.  They left a note saying, "Sorry!" but the boys never saw/read it.  (After 24 hours of stepping over the written apology and ornament pieces, I cleaned up the elf-induced mess.)

The Christmas Eve service began at 7pm which is the boys' bedtime.  They remained awake and well-behaved throughout the evening.  As soon as we got home, I reminded Henry to sprinkle his reindeer food (mixed at school last week) on the front lawn.  Before I could stop him, Liam dove into the snow, scooped up a handful of oats and glitter to enjoy a festive snack!  I have no idea why he did this--normally he's such a picky eater.

I tucked both boys in Henry's bed at 9:20 pm and they were asleep by 9:25 pm.  This next photo seems to suggest that we open gifts on Christmas Eve, however, the reason the street behind Henry looks so dark, is that the boys scrambled downstairs at 5:21 am.  All thirty or so gifts were opened by 5:30.

These reindeer footprints were my favorite craft of the season.  Super-easy, fun and adorable if I do say so myself!  We had a couple of craft misses, too.  Those Lego snow globes did not stay intact and the handprint tree skirt was a flop.  However, if you ever wondered what to do with the metal circles that help package refrigerated croissant dough--have I got an easy project for you.    Get some glitter glue and slap on a school picture.  Add ribbon and voila-- another ornament for the tree!

Finally, while cleaning out Henry's school bag, I found this letter.  When did he write this?  Was it displayed in the hallway outside his classroom all month?  I hope not!  Dear Santa, My name is Henry.  I have been nice this year.  One of the nice things I did was I cleaned up dog pee.  I made someone happy by swich seats...I helped my family when I waching t.v. when my mom was getting on makeup...

Thanks, Henry and Liam.  Thanks for keeping it real.

  5. Sounds like you had a lovely Christmas :) Ours was the same although sadly most of the tantrums were thrown by the adults, not the three year old child!
